Oil Mill "De Bonte Hen" (The Colourful Hen) at the Zaanse Schans (Zaanstad - Holland)
Oil mill "De Bonte Hen" is situated at the very northernmost end of Zaanse Schans. Its interior appeals to the imagination, with its attractive brown shades of wood. Built around 1693, this mill is an octagonal smock windmill with a gallery and a revolving cap. The mill has been the victim of lightning strikes and fires on a number of occasions. Each time the fire was extinguished in time and the damage repaired. Between 1973 and 1978, the mill was completely restored and refitted with the essential components needed to enable oil production, including a pair of edge runner stones, rams and stamps. The mill continues to produce oil on a regular basis.
