Grey Pansy Butterfly at the Artis Royal Zoo (also known as Natura Artis Magistra), Amsterdam (Holland)
The Grey Pansy Butterfly or Junonia atlites is a species of nymphalid butterfly found in South Asia. On the upperside, the wings are pale greyish buff and distinctly marked with dark brown discal and submarginal lines. Post-discal series of eye-spots, some of which are divided into an outer black half and an inner orange half, are found on both forewing and hindwing. On the underside, the wings are marked as per above but all markings are much paler.
The Butterfly Pavilion is the largest of its kind in the Netherlands, covering a thousand square meters and housing thousands of butterflies.
Twice a day, butterflies that have just crawled out of their cocoons are released into the pavilion.
