Although Lockheed's remarkable C-130 Hercules tactical airlifter made its maiden flight in 1954, the Royal Netherlands Air Force is a comparatively recent addition to the type's huge list of operating nations. It received its first two examples, both new-build C-130H-30 variants with a stretched fuselage, in 1994, and augmented these with a pair of standard-length C-130H models (ex-US Navy airframes) during 2010. All are on the strength of 336 Squadron based at Eindhoven. The Dutch Hercules has seen operational use in Rwanda, the former Yugoslavia and Afghanistan amongst other theatres. The 4 planes are named after 4 Dutchmen who have been important for the Royal Netherlands Air Force: G-273 (Ben Swagerman, Knight 4th class of the Military William Order), G-275 (Joop Mulder), G-781 (Bob van der Stok) and G-988 (Willem den Toom).

The Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT) is the world's largest military air show, held annually over the third weekend in July,
usually at RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire, England in support of The Royal Air Force Charitable Trust.
The show typically attracts a total of 150.000 to 160.000 spectators over the weekend.
