The Eurocopter AS-532 Cougar (now Airbus Helicopters H215M) is a twin-engine, medium-weight, multipurpose helicopter developed by France.
The AS-532 is a development and upgrade of the Aérospatiale SA-330 Puma in its militarized form. Its civilian counterpart is the Eurocopter AS-332 Super Puma. The AS-532 has been further developed as the Eurocopter EC725. The Royal Netherlands Air Force uses the AS-532U2 Cougar helicopter for transporting troops and equipment. External loads can be hooked under the hull. A number of Cougars can operate as an onboard helicopter from ships. For this they are equipped with inflatable floating bodies to be able to float in an emergency. The range of duties also consists of assistance with fire fighting, using the so-called 'bambi buckets' with a capacity of 2500 litres of water.
Each year the Netherlands armed forces services organises open days on a rotational basis. Open days are intended to show how the Netherlands Defence organisation works for peace and security throughout the world. On these days everyone is welcome to have a look behind the scenes.
The 2019 Royal Netherlands Air Force Open Days took place at Volkel Air Base, home to 312 and 313 F-16 Fighting Falcon squadrons.
