PZL-Mielec Lim-5 (905 Red) as used by the East German Air Force at the Luftwaffenmuseum, Berlin-Gatow (Germany)

This Lim-5/MiG-17F was originally delivered from Poland in June 1957 to the East Germany Air Force (Luftstreitkräfte der Nationalen Volksarmee).
It had served with Jagdfliegergeschwader 1 (1st Fighter Squadron) "Fritz Schmenkel" at Cottbus.
From 1963 it was flying with the Jagdfliegergeschwader 8 (8th Fighter Squadron) "Hermann Matern" at Marxwalde (Neuhardenberg).
Finally from 1972 to 1985 it had flown with the Jagdbombenfliegergeschwader 37 (37th Fighter Bomber Squadron) "Klement Gottwald" at Drewitz.

The Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-17 (NATO reporting name: Fresco) is a high-subsonic fighter aircraft produced in the USSR from 1952 and operated by numerous air forces in many variants. It is an advanced development of the very similar appearing MiG-15 of the Korean War. In 1955 Poland bought a licence for the manufacturing of the Soviet MiG-17, the basic jet fighter of Warsaw Pact countries. The licensed aircraft was given the designation Lim-5 (an abbreviation of: Licencyjny myśliwiec – "Licence fighter"). The first Lim-5 (licensed MiG-17F) was built in WSK-Mielec on 28 November 1956, replacing the production of the Lim-2 (MiG-15bis). The MiG-17F is the basic fighter version powered by VK-1F engine with afterburner.
