The STS Young Endeavour is an Australian tall ship and was given to Australia by the British government in 1988, as a gift to celebrate Australia's bicentenary of colonisation. Construction began on the ship in May 1986 by Brooke Marine (now known as Brooke Yachts) in Lowestoft, England and on 3 August 1987 she began the long voyage to Australia with a crew which included 24 young people from Britain and Australia. The official handover ceremony took place on 25 January 1988 in the presence of their Royal Highnesses the Prince and Princess of Wales (Charles and Diana) in Farm Cove, Sydney Harbour. Although operated by the Royal Australian Navy, Young Endeavour is primarily used to provide sail training to Australian youth through the Young Endeavour Youth Scheme, with up to 30 youth supplementing the small naval complement on a voyage.
The Scheme's management and administration is undertaken by civilian staff, and is based in the ship's home port of Sydney, Australian.
