The Patrouille Suisse is an aerobatic team of the Swiss Air Force. The Patrouille Suisse normally operates six Northrop F-5E Tiger II aircraft out of total of twelve F-5Es that are maintained in team colours. Since 1996 ten aircraft are able to accept one of the eight smoke generators that were made by RUAG. When fitted with a smoke generator, including the two 40 litres (11 US gal) bottles of diesel, the right gun of the F-5E is disabled. The teams F-5Es are also used for other purposes such as training and as target tugs flown by Target Squadron 12,
facilitated by their high visibility colouring.

On 9 June 2016 two Northrop F-5E Tiger II jets of the Swiss Air Force display team Patrouille Suisse were involved in a mid-air collision
near Leeuwarden Air Base, the Netherlands. One of the aircraft, J-3086 (as seen above), crashed into a pond near a house in Bitgum,
about 10 kilometres (about 6 miles) away from Leeuwarden. The pilot managed to get to safety with his ejection seat but landed in a local resident's greenhouse. He was taken to the hospital with a broken ankle and lacerations. The other aircraft, J-3088, landed safely back at Leeuwarden Air Base. The aircraft had lost about 3/4 of the right hand horizontal stabilizer. The display team was practising in preparation for the Royal Netherlands Air Force Open Days (10-11 June). It's the first serious incident in the history of the Swiss team, founded in 1964.
