The Sukhoi Su-27 Flanker is a twin-engine super-maneuverable fighter aircraft designed by Sukhoi. It was intended as a direct competitor
for the large United States fourth-generation fighters, with 3530 kilometre (1910 nmi) range, heavy armament, sophisticated avionics and high manoeuvrability. The Su-27 most often flies air superiority missions, but its most modern variants are able to perform almost all combat operations. Complementing the smaller MiG-29, the Su-27 has its closest US counterpart in the McDonnell Douglas (now Boeing) F-15 Eagle. The Su-27 entered service with the Soviet Air Force in 1985. The Su-27SKM (Seriyniy Kommercheskiy Modernizirovanniy - Serial Commercial Modernized) is a single-seat multi-role fighter for export. It is a derivative of the Su-27SK (Seriyniy Kommercheskiy - Serial Commercial) but includes upgrades such as advanced cockpit, more sophisticated self-defense electronic countermeasures (ECM) and an in-flight refuelling system. Produced in Komsomolsk-on-Amur,
the prototype of Su-27SKM began testing in early 2003.
