Spectacled Bear at Tiergarten Schönbrunn (Vienna Zoo - Austria)
The Spectacled Bear (also known as the Andean Bear or Andean Short-faced Bear) is the only true bear of South America,
where it inhabits rainforest up to altitudes of 2000 metres (6562 ft). In Peru and in Columbia, these bears continue to face strong hunting pressure.
Zoological gardens have initiated an international breeding program to preserve the species. The Spectacled Bear is a skilled climber and likes to sleep in homemade nests in trees or in tree hollows.
