HNLMS "Middelburg" (M858) is a Dutch minehunter from the "Alkmaar" class and the eleventh ship for the Royal Netherlands Navy. It was laid down in 1983, launched in November 1986, and commissioned in December 1986. The ship was built by "Van der Giessen-de Noord Marinebouw" (GNM) shipyard in Alblasserdam, the Nethderlands. The HNLMS "Middelburg" is named after the capital of the Dutch Zeeland province, Middelburg.
An international prefix for Dutch Navy ships is HNLMS (His/Her Netherlands Majesty's Ship). The Dutch Navy itself uses the prefixes Zr. Ms.
(Zijner Majesteits, His Majesty's) when a king is on the throne, and Hr. Ms. (Harer Majesteits, Her Majesty's) when there is a queen. At the time of this photo in 2010, Queen Beatrix was on the thrown and so all ship had the Hr. Ms. (Harer Majesteits, Her Majesty's) as prefix.
