The HNLMS "Mahu" (M880) belongs to the "Van Straelen" class shallow-waters minesweeper and served in the Royal Netherlands Navy from 1961 to 1983, when it was decommissioned. In 2003 the 33 metre (108 ft) long vessel was transferred to the PMT (Stichting Promotie Maritieme Tradities) or the Promotion of Maritime Tradition Foundation, where she was fully restored by volunteers (mostly former Navy men) and is now ready to go again.
An international prefix for Dutch Navy ships is HNLMS (His/Her Netherlands Majesty's Ship). The Dutch Navy itself uses the prefixes Zr. Ms.
(Zijner Majesteits, His Majesty's) when a king is on the throne, and Hr. Ms. (Harer Majesteits, Her Majesty's) when there is a queen.
