British Tall Ship "Stavros S Niarchos" at the Sail In parade from IJmuiden to Amsterdam (North Sea Canal), Sail Amsterdam 2010 (Holland)
The "Stavros S Niarchos" is a British brig-rigged tall ship owned and operated by the Tall Ships Youth Trust (TSYT). She is primarily designed to provide young people with the opportunity to undertake voyages as character-building exercises, rather than pure sail-training. She is also used for adult voyages and holidays, which help subsidise the operation of the ship. The hulls for the two new brigs ("Stavros S Niarchos" and her sister ship "Prince William") were obtained half-completed from another project in Germany. These were transported to Appledore Ship Yards in Devon, where they were modified to the TSYT's requirements, and fitted out. She was completed in January 2000. The brig is named after the Greek businessman and sailor "Stavros Spyros Niarchos", who died in 1996. Mr Niarchos was first associated with the STA (Sail Training Association, now the TSYT) when he loaned his three masted schooner, Creole, to the Royal Navy so that cadets could take part in the first Tall Ships’ Race in 1956 and again in 1958. The Stavros S Niarchos Foundation was formed after his death and made a major contribution towards the build of the new brig
in order to continue the work of the TSYT in the United Kingdom.
