In 1946 it was decided to build two training schooners for the Swedish Navy. HMS "Gladan" (S01) was delivered from the Stockholm Naval Dockyard in June 1947 and was followed by it's sistership the HMS "Falken" (S02) in October of the same year. Both training schooners are part of the Skonertdivisionen (Schooner Squadron), which is a training and recruitment unit of the Swedish Navy.

Vessels of the Swedish Navy are given the prefix "HMS", short for "Hans/Hennes Majestäts Skepp" (His/Her Majesty's Ship). In English, this is often changed to "HSwMS" ("His/Her Swedish Majesty's Ship") to differentiate Swedish vessels from those of the Royal Navy from the United Kingdom.
