Dutch Schooner "Vliegende Hollander" (Flying Dutchman) at the Sail In parade
from IJmuiden to Amsterdam (North Sea Canal), Sail Amsterdam 2010 (Holland)
The "Vliegende Hollander" (Flying Dutchman) is a two-masted schooner and was originally built in 1892 as the sailing cargo vessel named "Martha".
Until the beginning of the 20th century these were the sailing ships that transported cargo by water. With the arrival of mechanical propulsion systems many of these clippers disappeared. Until 1995 she plied the rivers as a cargo vessel. Klaas en Xandra van Twillert (current owners) discovered this great clipper in the harbor of Amsterdam. The dream to build a ship like that together, thus became a reality.
During the winters of 1996 through 1999 the ship was completely overhauled and renamed "Vliegende Hollander".
After completion of the transformation she began a new life in the passenger service.
