Intended as a replacement for the superb DH82A Tiger Moth biplane with the Royal Air Force (RAF) and Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF), the monoplane Chipmunk went on to have an illustrious career, becoming the RAF's main elementary trainer. The type was built by de Havilland in Britain, at its Hatfield and Hawarden plants, as well as in Canada and Portugal; 735 were taken on by the Royal Air Force, out of a complete production run of around 1280. The Chipmunk 21 is the civil version of the Chipmunk 20 but fitted to civil standards, 28 built.
The Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT) is the world's largest military air show, held annually over the third weekend in July,
usually at RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire, England in support of The Royal Air Force Charitable Trust.
The show typically attracts a total of 150.000 to 160.000 spectators over the weekend.
