Greater Flamingos at the Auckland Zoo (New Zealand)

Flamingos are found in Central and South America, the West Indies and the Galapagos Islands. Their habitat ranges from coastal salt lagoons to brackish or saltwater shallows. Flamingos may live around lakes far inland or near the sea. Cartenoid pigments, found naturally in a variety of plants and animals provide flamingos with their pink colouring. Like us, when they relax weight is put more on one leg than the other. Very social, flamingo flocks may number up to tens of thousands. Flamingos are able to breed by the age of six. A single white egg is laid and cared for by both parents. Young are able to fly at around 78 days.
