Dornier Do-24ATT (RP-C2403) from the Iren Dornier Project (Dornier Museum) at the ILA 2006, Berlin-Schönefeld (Germany)
(Internationale Luftfahrt-Ausstellung, ILA or International Aviation Exhibition - also known as Berlin Air Show)
The Dornier Do-24 is a 1930s German three-engine flying boat designed by the Dornier Flugzeugwerke for maritime patrol and search and rescue. According to Dornier records, some 12.000 people were rescued by Do-24s during its flying career. A total of 279 were built among several factories from 1937–1945. The Dornier Do-24 was designed to meet a Dutch Navy requirement for a replacement of the Dornier Wals being used
in the Dutch East Indies, with the Netherlands government signing a contract for six Dornier Do-24s on 3 August 1936.
The last Do-24 was the Do-24TT (later known as the Do-24ATT), the result of Dornier's desire to test the high seas capability of an amphibious, economical aircraft. Production began in 1979 and was completed in 1983, the Do-24ATT was fitted with an advanced technology wing cut from a single piece of aluminium spar to simplify production efforts with improved PT6A-45Bs. It took to the skies on 25 April 1983 and was later retired to the Deutsches Museum in Germany. Iren Dornier, grandson of Claude Dornier, then removed the aircraft from the museum and brought it to the Philippines in 2003. It was retrofitted and restored in good working condition. It also underwent a series of rigorous test flights both on land and water and has received its airworthiness from the Philippine Aviation Authority (ATO). The certification became the GO SIGNAL of the aircraft to push through with the planned World Tour which jump started on February of 2004 and ended in July 2009. Currently (2014) the Do-24ATT is at the Dornier Museum located at Airport Friedrichshafen in Germany.
